The Socialist Policies We Need

“The future of our public services comes down to a question of power: who owns them, who controls them and whose interests they serve."

It was an honour to launch the Socialist Campaign Group’s new pamphlet, The Socialist Policies We Need, at Labour Party Conference.

The pamphlet sets out the policies we believe Andy Burnham should adopt to rebuild Labour’s support following the failures of the Starmer leadership and to deliver on his commitment to reverse four decades of neoliberal economics and policymaking.

It outlines a bold programme for government, including proposals for:

  • A new economic settlement that delivers prosperity for working people

  • Tax reforms capable of raising billions for social and economic investment

  • Strengthening workers’ rights

  • Fixing Britain’s housing and social security systems

  • Transforming social care and strengthening the NHS

  • A clear approach to AI, climate change, foreign policy, civil liberties, immigration and asylum

The foreword, written by Rebecca Long-Bailey MP, Richard Burgon MP and John McDonnell MP, highlights how members of the Socialist Campaign Group consistently led opposition to the Starmer government’s most damaging policies, including cuts to winter fuel support, attacks on disability benefits, and the failure to take meaningful action against Israel over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Through parliamentary debates, campaigns and sustained pressure, Campaign Group MPs helped secure important concessions from the Government.

My contribution to the pamphlet focuses on bringing public services back into public hands, making the case for democratic ownership and accountability as the foundation of high-quality, accessible public services.
